“Community… Unselfish sharing… Unity… These are things we hope to experience in our families, our churches, and our society, unfortunately, these qualities are often lacking. The book of Acts, entitled The Acts of the Apostles, records the continuation of the story of Jesus’ disciples after Jesus ascended to heaven. The first followers of Jesus came from different backgrounds yet demonstrated amazing community as the early church was formed.” Thus reads part of Max Lucado’s Life Lesson’s study of the book of Acts that will form the outline for a summer sermon series here at Ken Mawr Church that begins on Sunday, June 8, 2008. Think about our church. In what ways can you see the transforming power of Jesus' present in our church? That is a key question for us as we consider whether we are doing what God wants us to do in this ministry. Are we doing only what WE want to do, or are we doing what GOD wants us to do? Lucado points out in his Acts study that the men we read about in the preceding four books (the Gospels) are not really the same men. On the surface they don’t appear to be much different, but when we look in their eyes and listen to their voices and feel their passion, we will see that they have definitely changed. Which leads me to the question: How has God changed us? In college I had a friend named Hal Rowe. Hal was a down-home kind of guy who was from Westminster, Maryland. He played on the Messiah College basketball team, but unfortunately spent most of his time riding the bench. That never seemed to discourage him, because he was always energetic and positive about life. Whenever I would see him on campus – at a chapel service, a music ministry team practice, walking to class, or in the college dining hall – Hal would inevitably ask me something about what God was doing in my life. He was convinced that every believer was “different” because they had a fire burning within them that is not found on this earth. Hal believed that Christians who professed Jesus as Lord, were forgiven by the Father, and were blessed with the indwelling Holy Spirit, simply had to have a story to tell about what God was doing in their lives. Therefore, he would often ask me, and others, a pointed and personal question: “What has the Lord been doing in your life?” And given the opportunity to reflect on his question, I could always think of something that God was up to in my life…whether it was personal or global, inspirational or incomprehensible, plain or profound. The book of Acts is the incredible story of what God did for these changed men and what he longs to do for us today. Please join us on Sunday morning at Ken Mawr for a summer adventure in the book of Acts at the 8:30 and 11:00 AM worship services and at 9:45 AM for a small group Bible study for adults and teens. I'll See You in Church, Pastor Karl
